Wessex Society Lecture

The next Wessex Society Lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 pm, at the Paul Pope Centre for Film and Television, 40 Strawberry Marsh Road.  Please be advised that the doors will be opened at 7:00 and will be locked promptly at 7:30.  Please use the East entrance only.

The speaker is Writer and Journalist, Heather Barrett, who will speak on the topic “The Mill Girls:  the teenaged girls and women who left Newfoundland during the 1940’s to work at the British Commonwealth’s largest textile mill in what is now Cambridge Ontario.

At 9:48 a.m. March 12, 2009, the accident of Cougar Flight
491 off the coast of St. John’s, NL, resulted in the loss of life of 17 people. This year marks the
seventeenth anniversary of this loss of life.
On Thursday, March 12, 2026, Eastern Chaplaincy will join families, friends and co-workers of
those lost for an annual memorial service. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Service will also

Yarnival

Textile and Apparel Design students at College of the North Atlantic host the annual event Yarnival on March 13 (12–3 PM) at the Prince Philip Drive Campus, and we’d love to share it with members of our local arts community.
Yarnival is a community-focused fundraiser supporting our graduating students. The event will feature local arts and craft vendors, a bake sale, a silent auction, and live, hands-on demonstrations including block printing, mending, and needle felting.

Great Big Book Sale

CFUW (The Canadian Federation of University Women) is preparing for its Great Big Book Sale   by collecting books from February 28 to March  15 at the Former Globo Shoes location in the Avalon Mall parking lot. The sale takes place March 26-March 28.   

Last year's sale was very successful. CFUW St. John's was able to  fund $45,000 in scholarships and $20,000  
in Community Outreach.

 People of the Sea Service continues. Memorial United Church in Portugal Cove will be hosting the 2026 People of the Sea Service at 2:30pm on Sunday, March 22. This service recognizes all those who make a living from or on the sea through harvesting, researching, protecting and respecting our oceans in times of peace and war. Everyone is invited to this service to join with representatives from all levels of government, local community leaders, business leaders and others to celebrate and pay homage to the close cultural and historical ties to the sea.
